Wild Blueberry Signature Taste Tour
At Granite Town Farms we offer you the opportunity to take a unique “journey” spanning the evolution of the northern Wild Blueberry - "from the Earth to you". Choose from the following options: (See tour details below)
1) Journey “From the Earth to You”, our guided Signature Taste Tour (must be pre-booked).
2) Video Tour – a self-guided tour (no booking required).
3) "From Blossom to Box” – a self-guided tour (no booking required).
The evolution of wild blueberries is a surprise to most visitors. Most are familiar with the wild blueberry's cultivated cousins but have no idea this wild version “just grows” in a natural acidic soil setting that is carefully managed, thus encouraging a high-quality, high-production growing cycle. The second element of surprise is that the Wild Blueberry’s growing cycle produces fruit only every second year, not yearly, as is the case of most crops.
The owners and staff, who are the tour guides, are excellent story-weavers with a burning passion for the wild blueberry, their farm and their business. They conduct tours in a way that naturally encourages questions and interaction and they make it a truly "fun" experience "from our family to yours"! They have a unique talent of engaging visitors and are sincerely interested in their touring visitors.
1) Journey “From the Earth to You”, our guided Signature Taste Tour
This tour is a 45 minute to 1 hr guided “walking tour” that begins in a small wild blueberry “patch” where you can experience the early history, uses and harvesting methods, dating back to the time when the early pioneers came to North America and discovered this native plant. You then move on to a video and "photo storyboards" that tell the story of the progress of managing and growing Wild Blueberries, along with modern harvesting and cleaning methods, including a look at the on-site equipment.
Visitors who are luck enough to drop in during the Wild Blueberry harvest will get a real-time view of the action. They will see how the berries look coming in fresh from the field, how they get filtered to eliminate grass and leaves and how the plant workers on the sorting line give the berries their final "hands-on" quality cleaning before flowing into the boxes for the consumer market. Out of harvest season there is a viewing area where you see the process of the sorting line and process of “from Blossom to Box”.
This tour also includes a viewing area where our gourmet sweet and savory food produts (jams, vinaigrettes, etc) are processed by hand. And this tour wouldn't be complete without our “Signature Taste Tour”, a mouth-watering sampling of our many gourmet Wild Blueberry products, including the savory, "wild blueberries with a kick" products. All products are conveniently for sale in the adjacent “Wild Gift Shoppe”.
2) Video Tour – Self Guided
A self guided descriptive 5-minute video outlining the history of Wild Blueberries. It takes you from the days of native Indians using this wild fruit for medicinal purposes way before North America was discovered – all the way through the technological advances that enable this antioxidant-rich natural wonder to provide gourmet food experiences in ways never dreamed possible.
3) From “Blossom to Box” – Self Guided
This is a self-guided photo story boards and viewing tour of the progress of managing and growing Wild Blueberries. It covers the harvesting methods, including equipment, since the early pioneers came to North America and discovered this native plant. Visitors who are lucky enough to drop in during the Wild Blueberry harvest will get a real-time view of the action. They will see how the berries look coming in fresh from the field, how they get filtered to eliminate grass and leaves, and how the plant workers on the sorting line gives the berries thier final “hands-on” quality cleaning before flowing into boxes for the consumer market.
